(0:02) Now turn to section 2 on page 3. (0:08) Now turn to section 2. (0:11) Section 2. (0:12) You will hear a radio programme about singing in a choir. (0:17) First, you have some time to look at questions 11 to 15. (0:22) Now listen carefully and answer questions 11 to 15.
(0:27) And for our regular spot on Things to Do in Town, (0:31) here's our reporter Samuel Cooper. (0:33) It's been fun to write about joining some of our local choirs. (0:38) Thank you.
(0:39) Well, feeling a bit apprehensive about my ability to sing in tune, (0:44) I recently headed off for rehearsals at the town's three biggest choirs, (0:49) Mitchell's Town Choir, the Black Bell Male Voice Choir, and the Caroline Singers. (0:56) I received a very warm welcome at all three choirs. (1:00) They are always on the lookout for new and enthusiastic singers.
(1:05) Now, obviously deciding which choir to join will depend to some extent on your taste in music. (1:12) Black Bell caters for most musical taste as it has a hugely varied repertoire as does Mitchell's Town. (1:20) If you're after a more classical feel, the Caroline Singers tend to focus on madrigals, (1:26) that's unaccompanied singing without any instruments.
(1:30) If you want to meet people who share an interest in music, Mitchell's Town Choir is a good place to start. (1:37) Apart from their own performances, they also arrange group visits to see operas and attend music festivals. (1:44) So it can be a great way to make friends.
(1:48) But it's not just a chance to develop a skill, travel, or make friends that's on offer. (1:53) You could win a gold medal, too! (1:57) Mitchell's Town are hoping to get to the final at the Melody Competition in Atlanta. (2:03) And Black Bell are the current holders of the Counter Male Voice Choir Award, (2:08) which was presented to them by the director of the London Opera just last month.
(2:14) You can also be a part of a recording deal. (2:17) Mitchell's Town has just joined Black Bell and Caroline Singers as recording artists for their first CD, due in shops in December. (2:27) And if all of that isn't enough, you can also benefit the local community by helping to raise funds for good causes.
(2:35) Mitchell's Town regularly performs at functions helping the disabled and the elderly, (2:40) while Black Bell donates a percentage of its profits to certain local charities. (2:46) Before you hear the rest of the programme, you have some time to look at questions 16 to 20. (2:54) Now listen and answer questions 16 to 20.
(2:59) You may feel unable to join a choir because you're worried you'd struggle to find the time to attend rehearsals because of work or family commitments. (3:09) Well, there is a solution to that. (3:12) Start your own choir.
At work.
(3:16) This has been done in companies large and small, and I went to find out about the one at the accountant's, John White. (3:24) The choir's organiser, Elizabeth Arnold, told me the reason she thinks people like the choir.
(3:30) She said that, while the thought of a big networking opportunities might be at the back of some people's mind, (3:37) it's having the opportunity to switch off and focus on something completely different, that thereafter. (3:45) The people that join tend to be fairly competent singers to start with because, naturally enough, people don't want to look bad in front of their colleagues. (3:55) Companies like John White encourage their employees to set up choirs at work because it can help to create a healthier working atmosphere.
(4:05) For example, people who previously didn't get on can find they have something in common. (4:12) Which is just common sense, really. (4:15) Elizabeth Arnold also stresses that you don't need a lot of people to get the choir off the ground.
(4:21) They started off four years ago with just five people. (4:26) That's now risen to 19 while their average attendance at rehearsals is 12. (4:32) Many people don't have time to go to rehearsals outside work.
(4:36) However, they find the time to go to them while they're at work. (4:41) At John White, they found the middle of the day works best because not everyone works the same hours. (4:48) So, scheduling early morning rehearsals can be problematic.
(4:53) The same is true for late afternoon. (4:56) Supporting their choir is something that John White are very happy to do. (5:02) Although members pay a joining fee to cover the cost of refreshments at parties and wear special concert shirts, (5:10) the company organises regular sessions with a professional vocal coach free of charge to members of the choir.
(5:17) So, if you'd like more information about the choirs... (5:21) That is the end of Section 2. (5:24) You now have half a minute... (5:26) This IELTS listening audio is specially made by IELTS Mirco Telegram channel. (5:30) If you want more, join my telegram channel, IELTS Mirco. (5:34) Section 3. (5:35) You will hear two students called Eva and Mike discussing their research project on tourism.
(5:42) First, you have some time to look at questions 21 to 26. (5:47) Now listen carefully and answer questions 21 to 26.
