(0:00) Part 1. You will hear a woman calling a tourist information office to ask about a festival. (0:09) First, you have some time to look at questions 1 to 4. (0:34) Now listen carefully and answer questions 1 to 4. (0:41) Good morning. You're through to the tourist information office.
(0:44) Tim speaking. How can I help you? (0:47) Oh, hello. Could you give me some information about next month's festival please? (0:52) My family and I will be staying in the town that week.
(0:55) Of course. Well, it starts with a concert on the afternoon of the 17th. (1:01) Oh, I heard about that.
The orchestra and singers come from the USA, don't they?
(1:07) They're from Canada. They're very popular over there. (1:11) They're going to perform a number of well-known pieces that will appeal to children as well as adults.
(1:17) That sounds good. My whole family are interested in music. (1:21) The next day, the 18th, there's a performance by a ballet company called Eustatis.
(1:28) Sorry? (1:29) The name is spelt E-U-S-T-A-T-I-S. (1:37) They appeared in last year's festival and went down very well. (1:41) Again, their programme is designed for all ages.
(1:44) Good. I expect we'll go to that. (1:48) I hope there's going to be a play during the festival.
A comedy, ideally.
(1:53) You're in luck. On the 19th and 20th, (1:56) a local amateur group are performing one written by a member of the group.
(2:01) It's called Jemima. That'll be on in the town hall. (2:06) They've already performed it two or three times.
(2:09) I haven't seen it myself, but the review in the local paper was very good. (2:13) And is it suitable for children? (2:17) Yes. In fact, it's aimed more at children than at adults.
(2:21) So both performances are in the afternoon. (2:24) And what about dance? Will there be any performances? (2:29) Yes, also on the 20th, but in the evening. (2:33) A professional company is putting on a show of modern pieces (2:36) with electronic music by young composers.
(2:39) Uh-huh. (2:41) The show is about how people communicate or fail to communicate with each other. (2:46) So it's got the rather strange name, chat.
(2:50) I suppose that's because that's something we do both face-to-face and online. (2:56) That's right. (3:00) Before you hear the rest of the conversation, (3:02) you have some time to look at questions five to ten.
(3:36) Now listen and answer questions five to ten. (3:43) Now there are also some workshops and other activities. (3:47) They'll all take place at least once every day, (3:50) so everyone who wants to take part will have a chance.
(3:53) Good. We're particularly interested in cookery. (3:57) You don't happen to have a cookery workshop, do you? (4:00) We certainly do.
(4:02) It's going to focus on how to make food part of a healthy lifestyle. (4:07) And it'll show that even sweet things like cakes (4:10) can contain much less sugar than they usually do. (4:15) That might be worth going to.
(4:17) We're trying to encourage our children to cook. (4:20) Another workshop is just for children, (4:23) and that's on creating posters to reflect the history of the town. (4:28) The aim is to make children aware of how both the town (4:32) and people's lives have changed over the centuries.
(4:37) The results will be exhibited in the community centre. (4:40) Then the other workshop is in toy making, (4:44) and that's for adults only. (4:46) Oh, why is that? (4:48) Because it involves carpentry.
(4:51) Participants will be making toys out of wood, (4:54) so there'll be a lot of sharp chisels and other tools around. (4:59) It makes sense to keep children away from it. (5:01) Exactly.
(5:03) Now let me tell you about some of the outdoor activities. (5:07) There'll be supervised wild swimming. (5:10) Wild swimming? What's that? (5:13) It just means swimming in natural waters rather than a swimming pool.
(5:18) Oh, OK. In a lake, for instance. (5:21) Yes.
There's a beautiful one just outside the town,
(5:25) and that'll be the venue for the swimming. (5:27) There'll be lifeguards on duty, so it's suitable for all ages. (5:32) And finally, there'll be a walk in some nearby woods every day.
(5:38) The leader is an expert on insects. (5:41) He'll show some that live in the woods (5:43) and how important they are for the environment. (5:46) So there are going to be all sorts of different things to do during the festival.
(5:51) There certainly are. (5:53) If you'd like to read about how the preparations for the festival are going, (5:57) the festival organiser is keeping a blog. (6:00) Just search online for the festival website and you'll find it.
(6:05) Well, thank you very much for all the information. (6:08) You're welcome. Goodbye.
(6:10) Goodbye. (6:14) That is the end of part one. (6:17) You now have one minute to check your answers to part one.
