(0:00) Section 1. You will hear a man enquiring in a tourist centre about activities suitable for families. (0:13) First, you have some time to look at questions 1 to 4. (0:38) You will see that there is an example that has been done for you. (0:42) On this occasion only, the conversation relating to this will be played first.
(0:51) Hi, can I help you? (0:54) I'd like to find out if you have any excursions suitable for families. (0:59) Sure. How about taking your family for a cruise? (1:02) We have a steamship that takes passengers out several times a day.
It's over 100 years old.
(1:11) The cruise takes place on a steamship. So, steamship has been written in the space.
(1:19) Now we shall begin. (1:22) You should answer the questions as you listen because you will not hear the recording a second time. (1:31) Listen carefully and answer questions 1 to 4. (1:39) Hi, can I help you? (1:41) I'd like to find out if you have any excursions suitable for families.
(1:46) Sure. How about taking your family for a cruise? (1:49) We have a steamship that takes passengers out several times a day. It's over 100 years old.
(1:55) That sounds interesting. How long is the trip? (1:58) About an hour and a half. And don't forget to take pictures of the mountains.
(2:02) They are all around you when you are on the boat and they look fantastic. (2:05) Okay. And I assume there is a cafe or something on board? (2:09) Sure.
How old are your children?
(2:12) My daughter is 15 and my son is 7. (2:15) Right. Well, there are various things you can do once you've crossed the lake to make a day of it. (2:21) One thing that's very popular is a visit to the country farm.
(2:25) You're met off the boat by the farmer and he'll take you to the holding pens where the sheep are kept. (2:30) Children love feeding them. (2:32) My son would love that.
He really likes animals.
(2:35) Well, there's also a 40-minute trek round the farm on a horse if he wants. (2:40) Do you think he'd manage it? He hasn't done that before.
(2:44) Sure. It's suitable for complete beginners. (2:47) Good.
(2:48) And again, visitors are welcome to explore the farm on their own as long as they take care to close gates and so on. (2:55) There are some very beautiful gardens along the side of the lake which also belong to the farm. (3:00) They'll be just at their best now.
You could easily spend an hour or two there.
(3:04) Okay. Well, that all sounds good.
And can we get lunch there?
(3:09) You can. And it's very good, though it's not included in the basic cost. You pay when you get there.
(3:16) Right. (3:19) Before you hear the rest of the conversation, you have some time to look at questions 5 to 10. (3:56) Now listen and answer questions 5 to 10.
(4:03) So, is there anything else to do over on that side of the lake? (4:07) Well, what you can do is take a bike over on the ship and then go on a cycling trip. (4:12) There's a trail there called the Back Road. You could easily spend three or four hours exploring it.
(4:19) And the scenery's wonderful. (4:21) They'll give you a map when you get your ticket for the cruise. There's no extra charge.
(4:26) What's the trail like in terms of difficulty? (4:29) Quite challenging in places. It wouldn't be suitable for your seven-year-old. (4:34) It needs someone who's got a bit more experience.
(4:37) Hmm. Well, my daughter loves cycling, and so do I. (4:41) So maybe the two of us could go, and my wife and son could stay on the farm. (4:47) That might work out quite well.
But we don't have bikes here. Is there somewhere we could rent them?
(4:55) Yes, there's a place here in the city. It's called Ratchison's.
(5:00) I'll just make a note of that. How do you spell it? (5:04) R-A-T-C-H-E-S-O-N-S (5:11) It's just by the cruise ship terminal. (5:13) OK.
(5:15) You'd also need to pick up a repair kit for the bike from there to take along with you. (5:19) And you'd need to take along a snack and some water. It'd be best to get those in the city.
(5:25) Fine. That shouldn't be a problem. And I assume I can rent a helmet from the bike place.
(5:31) Sure. You should definitely get that. (5:33) It's a great ride, but you want to be well prepared because it's very remote.
(5:38) You won't see any shops round there or anywhere to stay, so you need to get back in time for the last boat. (5:44) Yeah. So what sort of prices are we looking at here? (5:48) Let's see.
That'd be one adult and one child for the cruise with farm tour.
(5:53) That's $117 and an adult and a child for the cruise only, so that's $214 altogether. (6:03) Oh, wait a minute.
How old did you say your daughter was?
(6:07) Fifteen. (6:08) Then I'm afraid it's $267 because she has to pay the adult fare, which is $75, instead of the child fare, which is $22. (6:18) Sorry about that.
(6:19) That's OK. (6:25) That is the end of Section 1. (6:29) You now have half a minute to check your answers.
