(0:00) Part 1. You will hear two neighbours who live in an apartment block talking about shopping for food. (0:09) First you have some time to look at questions one to six. (0:43) Now listen carefully and answer questions one to six.
(0:50) Hi Shannon, how are you settling into your new flat? (0:54) Really well, thanks. (0:56) You look like you're going shopping. (0:57) Yes, I am.
My cousins are coming to stay for a couple of days and I have to cook for them.
(1:05) Well, there are plenty of places to buy food in Kite Place. It's the area by the harbour.
(1:12) Oh, okay. I'll find that on the map. Thanks.
(1:17) What sort of food do you need to get? (1:19) Well, neither of them eats meat but they both like fish. (1:23) Well, there's a really good fish market there. (1:26) Oh, great.
Where is it exactly?
(1:29) It's at the far end of Kite Place. So you have to go over the bridge and then it's on the right. (1:37) Okay.
Is it open all day?
(1:40) It doesn't close until four but I'd recommend going earlier than that. It does run out of (1:47) some things. (1:48) Oh, I don't want that to happen.
(1:50) As long as you get there by three-thirty, you should be fine. (1:55) It's only eleven now, so plenty of time. (1:57) Right.
(1:58) Do you need to buy vegetables too? (2:01) I do and I want to avoid all the plastic packaging in the supermarket. (2:06) Well, there's a really nice organic shop there. Now, what's it called? It's the name of a flower.
(2:14) I know, it's Rose. (2:16) Oh, that's a nice name. (2:17) Yeah, it sells vegetables and quite a lot of other stuff.
(2:22) And where's that? (2:23) Well, as you reach the market, you'll see a big grey building on your left. (2:28) I think it used to be a warehouse. Anyway, now it's a restaurant upstairs but the ground floor (2:35) has two shops either side of the entrance and it's the one on the left.
(2:41) That's easy enough. (2:42) You can't miss it. There's also a big sign on the pavement so you can look for that.
(2:49) Fine. I guess if I need anything else, I'll have to go to the supermarket. (2:54) Yeah, you should be able to get everything you need.
(2:59) But there's a minibus that goes to the supermarket if you need it. (3:03) It's purple and the number is 289. (3:07) Thanks.
That's great.
(3:12) Before you hear the rest of the conversation, (3:15) you have some time to look at questions 7 to 10. Now listen and answer questions 7 to 10.
(3:45) So, what do you need to get at the fish market? The salmon is always very good. And the shellfish? (3:53) I'm going to make a curry, I think. And I need about 12 prawns for that.
(3:58) They'll have plenty of those. (4:00) Okay. (4:01) Have you ever tried samphire? (4:03) No.
What's that?
(4:05) It's a type of seaweed. (4:08) I just ask for a handful and you fry it in butter. It's delicious.
(4:14) I might try that. How do you spell it? (4:17) It's S-A-M-P-H-I-R-E. (4:27) Great.
It's always good to try something different.
(4:30) Yeah. (4:31) I'll see what beans they have in the organic shop.
(4:35) And I think I'll get something for dessert there. (4:39) How about a mango? (4:40) I'm not sure. They're not always ripe.
I'd prefer a melon. It's bigger too.
(4:47) Good idea.
The owner also sells a lot of spices there
(4:52) that you can put in a curry. And things like coconut. (4:56) Oh, that's very helpful.
I'll have a look.
(5:00) No problem. (5:02) I know bread doesn't really go with curry, but I always like to have some in case.
(5:07) As I said, all the bread is homemade and there's lots of variety. I like the brown bread myself. (5:15) Sounds good.
(5:17) They sell other things there too. (5:19) Like cakes? I love chocolate cake. (5:23) Well, not that.
But they have a whole range of tarts. And the best are the strawberry ones.
(5:32) Perfect.
Hopefully I won't even have to go to the supermarket.
(5:39) That is the end of part one. You now have one minute to check your answers to part one.
