(0:00) Section 1. You will hear a woman telephoning a tourist office to ask about free activities. (0:11) First, you have some time to look at questions 1 to 6. (0:47) You will see that there is an example that has been done for you. (0:51) On this occasion only, the conversation relating to this will be played first.

(0:57) Good morning, this is Burnham Tourist Office, Martin speaking. (1:04) Oh, hello. I saw a poster about free things to do in the area, (1:09) and it said people should phone you for information.

(1:12) I'm coming to Burnham with my husband and two children for a few days, (1:17) on June the 27th, or possibly the 28th, and I'd like some ideas for things to do on the 29th. (1:25) Yes, of course. (1:26) The date that the woman wants information about is the 29th of June, (1:35) so the letter C has been circled.

(1:39) Now we shall begin. (1:42) You should answer the questions as you listen, because you will not hear the recording a second time. (1:50) Listen carefully, and answer questions 1 to 6. (1:55) Good morning, this is Burnham Tourist Office, Martin speaking.

(2:02) Oh, hello. I saw a poster about free things to do in the area, (2:06) and it said people should phone you for information. (2:10) I'm coming to Burnham with my husband and two children for a few days, (2:14) on June the 27th, or possibly the 28th, and I'd like some ideas for things to do on the 29th.

(2:22) Yes, of course. Okay. (2:25) Then let's start with a couple of events especially for children.

(2:28) The Art Gallery is holding an event called Family Welcome that day, (2:32) when there are activities and trails to use throughout the gallery. (2:35) That sounds interesting. What time does it start? (2:39) The gallery opens at 10, and the Family Welcome event runs from 10.30 until 2 o'clock.

(2:44) The gallery stays open until 5, and several times during the day (2:48) they're going to show a short film that the gallery has produced. (2:51) It demonstrates how ceramics are made, (2:54) and there'll be equipment and materials for children to have a go themselves. (2:58) Last time they ran the event there was a film about painting, (3:01) which went down very well with the children, and they're now working on one about sculpture.

(3:06) I like the sound of that. And what other events happen in Burnham? (3:11) Well, do you all enjoy listening to music? (3:13) Oh, yes. (3:14) Well, there are several free concerts taking place at different times, (3:17) one or two in the morning, the majority at lunchtime, and a couple in the evening, (3:23) and they range from pop music to Latin American.

(3:25) The Latin American could be fun. What time is that? (3:29) It's being repeated several times in different places. (3:32) They're performing in the Central Library at one o'clock, (3:35) then at four it's in the City Museum, (3:38) and in the evening at 7.30 there's a longer concert in the theatre.

(3:42) Right. I'll suggest that to the rest of the family. (3:45) Something else you might be interested in is the boat race along the river.

(3:49) Oh, yes. Do tell me about that. (3:51) The race starts at Offord Marina to the north of Burnham and goes as far as Summer Pool.

(3:57) The best place to watch it from is Charlesworth Bridge, though that does get rather crowded. (4:01) And who's taking part? (4:03) Well, local boat clubs, but the standard is very high. (4:07) One of them came first in the West of England Regional Championship in May this year.

(4:12) It was the first time a team from Burnham has won. (4:14) It means that next year they'll be representing the region in the National Championship. (4:22) Before you hear the rest of the conversation, you have some time to look at questions seven to ten.

(4:49) Now listen and answer questions seven to ten. (4:57) Now I've heard something about Paxton Nature Reserve. (5:01) It's a good place for spotting unusual birds, isn't it? (5:04) That's right, throughout the year.

(5:06) There is a lake there as well as a river and they provide a very attractive habitat, (5:11) so it's a good idea to bring binoculars if you have them. (5:14) And just at the moment you can see various flowers that are pretty unusual. (5:18) The soil at Paxton isn't very common.

(5:20) They're looking good right now. (5:22) Right. My husband will be particularly interested in that.

(5:26) And there's going to be a talk and slideshow about mushrooms (5:29) and you'll be able to go out and pick some afterwards and study the different varieties. (5:33) Uh-huh. And is it possible for children to swim in the river? (5:38) Yes.

Part of it has been fenced off to make it safe for children to swim in. (5:42) It's very shallow and there's a lifeguard on duty whenever it's open. (5:46) The lake is too deep, so swimming isn't allowed there.

(5:49) OK. We must remember to bring their swimming things in case we go to Paxton. (5:54) How long does it take to get there by car from Burnham? (5:57) About 20 minutes, but parking is very limited, (6:01) so it's usually much easier to go by bus.

(6:04) And it takes about the same time. (6:06) Right. Well, I'll discuss the options with the rest of the family.

(6:10) Thanks very much for all your help. (6:12) You're welcome. (6:13) Goodbye.

(6:14) Bye. (6:18) That is the end of Section 1. (6:21) You now have half a minute to check your answers.
