(0:01) Section 1 (0:04) You will hear a woman phoning the secretary of a cycling club to find out about becoming a member. (0:11) First, you have some time to look at questions 1 to 6. (0:46) You will see that there is an example that has been done for you. (0:50) On this occasion only, the conversation relating to this will be played first.
(0:58) Hello, South City Cycling Club. (1:02) Oh, hi. Um, I want to find out about joining the club.
(1:07) Right, I can help you there. I'm the club secretary and my name's Jim Hunter. (1:13) Oh, hi Jim.
(1:17) The club secretary's name is Jim Hunter, so Hunter has been written in the space. (1:25) Now we shall begin. (1:28) You should answer the questions as you listen because you will not hear the recording a second time.
(1:37) Listen carefully and answer questions 1 to 6. (1:44) Hello, South City Cycling Club. (1:47) Oh, hi. Um, I want to find out about joining the club.
(1:52) Right, I can help you there. I'm the club secretary and my name's Jim Hunter. (1:58) Oh, hi Jim.
(1:59) So, are you interested in membership for yourself? (2:03) That's right. (2:05) OK, well there are basically two types of adult membership. (2:09) If you're pretty serious about cycling, there's the full membership.
(2:15) That costs $260 and that covers you not just for ordinary cycling, (2:22) but also for races both here in the city and also in other parts of Australia. (2:28) Right, well I'm not really up to that standard. (2:31) I was more interested in just joining a group to do some cycling in my free time.
(2:37) Sure, that's why most people join. (2:40) So in that case, you'd be better with the recreational membership. (2:45) That's $108 if you're over 19 and $95 if you're under.
(2:52) I'm 25. (2:53) OK, it's paid quarterly and you can upgrade it later to the full membership if you want to, of course. (3:02) Now, both types of membership include the club fee of $20.
(3:07) They also provide insurance in case you have an accident, (3:11) though we hope you won't need that, of course. (3:15) No. OK, well I'll go with the recreational membership, I think, (3:19) and that allows me to join in the club activities and so on? (3:24) That's right, and once you're a member of the club, (3:27) you're also permitted to wear our kit when you're out cycling.
(3:31) It's green and white. (3:33) Yes, I've seen cyclists wearing it. (3:36) So can I buy that at the club? (3:38) No, it's made to order by a company in Brisbane.
(3:42) You can find them online. (3:44) They're called Jerry's. (3:46) That's J-E-R-R-I-Z.
(3:52) You can use your membership number to put in an order on their website. (3:56) OK, now can you tell me a bit about the rides I can do? (4:01) Sure. (4:02) So we have training rides pretty well every morning, (4:06) and they're a really good way of improving your cycling skills (4:09) as well as your general level of fitness.
(4:12) But they're different levels. (4:15) Level A is pretty fast. (4:17) You're looking at about 30 or 35 kilometres an hour.
(4:22) If you can do about 25 kilometres an hour, you'd probably be Level B. (4:29) And then Level C are the novices who stay at about 15 kilometres per hour. (4:35) Right. (4:35) Well, I reckon I'd be Level B. (4:38) So when are the sessions for that level? (4:41) There are a couple each week.
(4:44) They're both early morning sessions. (4:46) There's one on Tuesdays, and for that one you meet at 5.30am, (4:52) and the meeting point's the stadium. (4:55) Do you know where that is? (4:57) Yes, it's quite near my home, in fact.
(4:59) OK, and how about the other one? (5:02) That's on Thursdays. (5:03) It starts at the same time, but they meet at the main gate to the park. (5:09) Is that the one just past the shopping mall? (5:12) That's it.
(5:16) Before you hear the rest of the conversation, (5:18) you have some time to look at questions 7 to 10. (5:43) Now listen and answer questions 7 to 10. (5:50) So how long are the rides? (5:52) They're about an hour and a half, (5:55) so if you have a job, it's easy to fit in before you go to work, (5:59) and the members often go somewhere for coffee afterwards, (6:04) so it's quite a social event.
(6:06) OK, that sounds good. (6:09) I've only just moved to the city, so I don't actually know many people yet. (6:13) Well, it's a great way to meet people.
(6:16) And does each ride have a leader? (6:18) Sometimes, but not always. (6:21) But you don't really need one. (6:23) The group members on the ride support one another anyway.
(6:27) How would we know where to go? (6:29) If you check the club website, (6:31) you'll see that the route for each ride is clearly marked, (6:35) so you can just print that out and take it along with you. (6:39) It's similar from one week to another, (6:42) but it's not always exactly the same. (6:45) And what do I need to bring? (6:47) Well, bring a bottle of water and your phone.
(6:51) You shouldn't use it while you're cycling, but have it with you. (6:55) Right. (6:56) And in winter, it's well before sunrise when we set out, (7:00) so you need to make sure your bike's got lights.
(7:04) That's OK. (7:05) Well, thanks, Jim. (7:07) I'd definitely like to join.
(7:09) So what's the best way of going about it? (7:15) That is the end of Section 1. (7:18) You now have half a minute to check your answers. (7:24) Thank you.
