(0:00) Part 1. You will hear a man talking to the coordinator of a photography club. (0:07) First, you have some time to look at questions 1 to 4. (0:31) Now listen carefully and answer questions 1 to 4. (0:39) Hello, Wayside Camera Club. Brida speaking.

(0:42) Oh, hello. My name's Dan and I'd like to join your club. (0:47) That's great, Dan.

We have an application form. (0:50) Would you like to complete it over the phone? (0:53) Then you can ask any questions you might have. (0:56) Oh yes, thanks.

(0:57) OK. So what's your family name? (1:00) It's Green. Dan Green.

(1:03) So can I take your email address? (1:06) Yes, it's dan1068 at market dot com. (1:13) Thanks. And what about your home address? (1:17) Well, I'm about ten miles away from your club, in Peacetown.

(1:22) I live in a house there. (1:24) OK. So what's the house number and street? (1:28) It's 52 Marrowfield Street.

(1:31) Is that M-A-R-R-O-W-F-I-E-L-D? (1:43) That's right. (1:44) And that's Peacetown, you said? (1:46) Uh-huh. (1:47) So how did you hear about our club? (1:50) Did you look on the internet? (1:52) I usually do that, but this time... (1:56) Well, I was talking to a relative the other day and he suggested it.

(2:01) Oh, is he a member too? (2:03) He belongs to another club, but he'd heard good things about yours. (2:08) OK. So what do you hope to get from joining? (2:12) Well, one thing that really interests me is the competitions that you have.

(2:18) I enjoy entering those. (2:20) Right. Anything else? (2:22) Well, I also like to socialise with other photographers.

(2:26) That's great. So what type of membership would you like? (2:31) What are the options? (2:32) It's £30 a year for full membership or £20 a year if you're an associate. (2:39) I think I'll go for the full membership then.

(2:43) That's a good idea because you can't vote in meetings with an associate membership. (2:52) Before you hear the rest of the conversation, (2:54) you have some time to look at questions 5 to 10. (3:28) Now listen and answer questions 5 to 10.

(3:35) If I could just find out a bit more about you... (3:38) OK. (3:39) So you said you wanted to compete. Have you ever won any photography competitions? (3:45) Not yet, but I have entered three in the past.

(3:50) Oh, that's interesting. So why don't you tell me something about those? (3:55) Let's start with the first one. (3:57) Well, the theme was entitled Domestic Life.

(4:02) I see. So it had to be something related to the home? (4:06) Yeah. I chose to take a photo of a family sitting round the dinner table having a meal.

(4:14) And I didn't win, but I did get some feedback. (4:18) Oh, what did the judges say? (4:21) That it was too busy as a picture. (4:24) Aha.

So it was the composition of the picture that they criticised? (4:29) That's right. And once they'd told me that, I could see my mistake. (4:35) So what was the theme of their second composition? (4:39) Well, my university was on the coast and that area gets a lot of beautiful sunsets.

(4:46) So that was the theme. (4:48) Oh, sunsets. That's a great theme.

(4:51) Yes. The instructions were to capture the clouds as well. (4:56) It couldn't just be blue sky and a setting sun.

(5:00) Sure, because they give you all those amazing pinks and purples. (5:04) Yeah. And I thought I'd done that well, (5:07) but the feedback was that I should have waited a bit longer to get the shot.

(5:12) I see. So the timing wasn't right? (5:16) Yes. I took it too soon, basically.

(5:19) And then the third competition I entered was called Animal Magic. (5:25) Well, that's a difficult subject. (5:27) I know.

I had to take hundreds of shots. (5:31) I'm sure, because animals move all the time. (5:35) That's what we had to show.

There had to be some movement in the scene. (5:40) I got a great shot of a fox in the end, (5:43) but I took it at night and, well, I suspected that it was a bit dark, (5:50) which is what I was told. (5:52) Well, Dan, you seem to be really keen and we'd be delighted to have you in our club.

(5:58) I'm sure we can help with all those areas that you've outlined. (6:02) Thanks. That's great.

(6:07) That is the end of part one. (6:09) You now have one minute to check your answers to part one.
