Speaker 3
(0:00) Part 1 You will hear a man asking a friend for advice on things to do in the city with a family of visitors. (0:10) First, you have some time to look at questions 1 to 6. (0:44) Now listen carefully and answer questions 1 to 6.
Speaker 2
(0:52) Sandra, I seem to remember you had some family visitors staying with you recently.
Speaker 1
(0:57) Yeah, that's right. (0:59) My brother and his family were here a couple of months ago.
Speaker 2
(1:01) OK, good. (1:03) Well, I wanted to ask your advice. (1:06) I've got my cousin and her family visiting next month and as I don't have kids, I've no idea where to take them.
Speaker 1
(1:14) Right. (1:15) What about accommodation? (1:16) Are they going to stay with you in your flat?
Speaker 2
(1:19) No, thankfully. (1:20) There wouldn't be room. (1:21) My cousin wants me to recommend a hotel.
(1:24) Do you know anywhere?
Speaker 1
(1:26) Yes, I do actually. (1:27) I always recommend people stay at the King's Hotel. (1:31) Where's that near?
(1:32) It's about five minutes walk from Murray Station, so nice and central. (1:37) It's actually on George Street.
Speaker 2
(1:39) Oh yes, I know. (1:41) I think they're on quite a tight budget. (1:44) So how much roughly is it to stay there?
Speaker 1
(1:47) If you book a family room, it's about £125 per night. (1:52) My brother paid for two double rooms in the end and I think that was around £95 for each room.
Speaker 2
(1:59) Oh, that's not too bad.
Speaker 1
(2:00) So how old are your cousin's kids?
Speaker 2
(2:03) Twelve and nine. (2:04) So I want to organise some trips while they're here. (2:08) I was thinking of doing a bus tour of the city centre as none of them have been here before.
Speaker 1
(2:14) Those bus tours are quite expensive. (2:17) I think it's better to do a walking tour. (2:20) It gives you a much better feel for the city.
(2:22) There's one that starts from Colton Square. (2:25) It takes a couple of hours and doesn't cost that much.
Speaker 2
(2:27) Sounds good. (2:29) I'll look that up. (2:30) Thanks.
Speaker 1
(2:31) If the weather's nice, one thing you could do is visit the old fort. (2:35) You could get there by boat. (2:36) The whole trip takes half a day.
Speaker 2
(2:38) That's a really good idea. (2:40) I'd like to do that myself. (2:42) And if the weather's bad, I was thinking they could go to the Science Museum.
(2:48) But maybe they could do that when I'm at work.
Speaker 1
(2:51) Yeah, don't forget it's closed on Mondays.
Speaker 2
(2:54) They're here from Saturday for four nights so Tuesday would be best, I think.
Speaker 1
(2:59) And it won't be so crowded then. (3:02) Saturdays are terrible. (3:03) I took my kids to the exhibition on old computers there and it was far too crowded.
(3:08) I wanted to go back but it's finished now.
Speaker 2
(3:10) That's a shame. (3:12) My cousin's kids would have enjoyed that.
Speaker 1
(3:14) There's another one starting soon on Space which looks really good too.
Speaker 2
(3:19) OK, well, I'll mention that to my cousin.
Speaker 3
(3:24) Before you hear the rest of the conversation, you have some time to look at questions 7 to 10. (3:50) Now listen and answer questions 7 to 10.
Speaker 1
(3:57) Have you thought about where to take them to eat?
Speaker 2
(4:00) Well, I really like all the food stalls at Clacton Market. (4:05) My cousin's vegetarian. (4:07) I know it's one of the best places for that kind of food.
Speaker 1
(4:10) Definitely. (4:11) And there'll be loads of choice for the kids too. (4:14) You need to get there quite early though.
(4:16) At the weekend most of the stalls stop serving lunch at 2.30. Good point.
Speaker 2
(4:21) It's all going to need careful planning. (4:24) My cousin said she'd love to take the kids to a show at the theatre but tickets are so expensive.
Speaker 1
(4:31) I know. (4:32) But you can get some good deals if you book online with BargainTickets.com for the following day. (4:38) On some seats there's a 75% discount.
(4:41) Really? (4:42) I must try and get some. (4:44) Yeah.
(4:45) There are lots of things you can do for free as well. (4:47) No need to spend a fortune. (4:49) Like what?
(4:50) They're coming next month, right? (4:52) Well, check and see if it's the same weekend as the Roots Music Festival in Blakewell Gardens. (4:58) R-O-O-T-S?
(5:01) Yeah, check it out online. (5:03) It's always a family-friendly event and there's no entry charge.
Speaker 2
(5:07) That sounds perfect.
Speaker 1
(5:08) And if you're in Blakewell Gardens, climb Telegraph Hill. (5:12) You'll be able to look right down on the port. (5:15) Everyone's always really impressed because it's so huge.
Speaker 2
(5:18) Oh, yeah. (5:19) I've been meaning to do that for ages. (5:21) I've heard the view's amazing.
Speaker 1
(5:23) Yeah, it's really worth the effort.
Speaker 2
(5:26) Well, that's given me loads of ideas. (5:29) Thanks so much for...
Speaker 3
(5:33) That is the end of Part 1. (5:36) You now have one minute to check your answers to Part 1.
