(0:02) You will hear a woman phoning a hotel about holding a party there. (0:11) First, you have some time to look at questions 1 to 7. (0:51) You will see that there is an example that has been done for you. (0:56) On this occasion only, the conversation relating to this will be played first.
(1:05) Good morning, Clare House Hotel. Andrew speaking. I'm the events manager.
(1:14) Andrew is the events manager. (1:17) So, events has been written in the space. (1:22) Now we shall begin.
(1:25) You should answer the questions as you listen because you will not hear the recording a second time. (1:33) Listen carefully and answer questions 1 to 7. (1:41) Good morning, Clare House Hotel. Andrew speaking.
I'm the events manager.
(1:47) Good morning, Andrew. My name's Samantha.
(1:50) I'm arranging a party for my parents' 50th wedding anniversary (1:55) and I'm ringing to ask about hiring a room sometime next September. (2:00) Also, my parents and several of the guests will need accommodation. (2:05) Okay.
I'm sure we can help you with that.
(2:09) Will you be having a sit-down meal or a buffet? (2:13) Probably a sit-down. (2:15) And do you know how many people there'll be? (2:18) Around 80, I think.
(2:20) Well, we have two rooms that can hold that number. (2:23) One is the Adelphi room. That can seat 85 or hold over 100 if people are standing for a buffet.
(2:33) Right. (2:34) If you have live music, there's room for four or five musicians in the gallery overlooking the room. (2:43) Our guests usually appreciate the fact that the music can be loud enough for dancing (2:47) but not too loud for conversation.
(2:50) Yes. I really don't like it when you can't talk. (2:54) Exactly.
Now, the Adelphi room is at the back of the hotel
(3:00) and there are French windows leading out onto the terrace. (3:05) This has a beautiful display of pots of roses at that time of the year. (3:11) Which direction does it face? (3:13) Southwest.
So that side of the hotel gets the sun in the afternoon and early evening.
(3:20) Very nice. (3:21) From the terrace, you can see the area of trees within the grounds of the hotel (3:27) or you can stroll through there to the river.
(3:30) That's on the far side, so it isn't visible from the hotel. (3:35) OK. (3:36) Then another option is the Carlton room.
(3:40) This is a bit bigger. It can hold up to 110 people (3:44) and it has the advantage of a stage, which is useful if you have any entertainment (3:51) or indeed a small band can fit onto it. (3:54) And can you go outside from the room? (3:58) No.
The Carlton room is on the first floor
(4:02) but on one side, the windows look out onto the lake. (4:06) Lovely. I think either of those rooms would be suitable.
(4:10) Can I tell you about some of the options we offer in addition? (4:14) Please do. (4:15) As well as a meal, you can have an MC, a Master of Ceremonies, (4:20) who'll be with you throughout the party. (4:23) What exactly is the MC's function? (4:26) I suppose they make a speech during the meal if we need one, do they? (4:31) That's right.
(4:33) All our MCs are trained as public speakers, so they can easily get people's attention. (4:39) Many guests are glad to have someone who can make themselves heard above the chatter. (4:44) And they're also your support.
(4:47) If anything goes wrong, the MC will deal with it, so you can relax. (4:52) Great. I'll need to ask you about food, but something else that's important is accommodation.
(5:00) You obviously have rooms in the hotel, but do you also have any other accommodation? (5:06) Like cabins, for example? (5:08) Yes, there are five in the grounds, all self-contained. (5:13) They each sleep two to four people and have their own living room, bathroom and small kitchen. (5:20) That sounds perfect for what we'll need.
(5:26) Before you hear the rest of the conversation, you have some time to look at questions eight to ten. (5:47) Now listen and answer questions eight to ten. (5:54) Now, you have various facilities, don't you? (5:58) Are they all included in the price of hiring the room? (6:01) The pool, for instance.
(6:03) Normally you'd be able to use it, but it'll be closed throughout September for refurbishment, I'm afraid. (6:11) The gym will be available, though, at no extra charge. (6:15) That's open all day from six in the morning until midnight.
(6:18) Right. (6:19) And the tennis courts, but there is a small additional payment for those. (6:24) We have four courts, and it's worth booking in advance if you possibly can, (6:29) as there can be quite a long waiting list for them.
(6:33) Right. Now, could we discuss the food? (6:36) This would be dinner around seven o'clock. (6:42) That is the end of section one.
(6:46) You now have half a minute to check your answers.
