(0:00) Part 1 (0:03) You will hear a woman phoning to ask about a summer cycling camp for her young son, (0:08) who is called Charlie. First you have some time to look at questions 1 to 5. (0:39) Now listen carefully and answer questions 1 to 5. (0:47) Hello, Junior Cycle Camp, Jake speaking. (0:51) Hi, I'm calling for some information about the cycle camp.
(0:56) I'm thinking of sending my son. (0:59) Great. Well, it's held every weekday morning over the summer vacation, (1:05) and we focus on basic cycling skills and safety.
(1:10) We have 8 levels for children from 3 years upwards. How old's your son? (1:18) Charlie? He's 7. He can ride a bike, (1:23) but he needs a little more training before he's safe to go on the road. (1:28) He'd probably be best in level 5. They start off practising on the site here, (1:36) and we aim to get them riding on the road, but first they're taken to ride in the park, (1:43) away from the traffic.
(1:46) Right. And can you tell me a bit about the instructors? (1:51) Well, all our staff wear different coloured shirts. (1:56) So we have 3 supervisors, and they have red shirts.
(2:02) They support the instructors, and they also stand in for me if I'm not around. (2:09) Then the instructors themselves are in blue shirts, (2:14) and one of these is responsible for each class. (2:19) Okay.
(2:20) In order to be accepted, all our instructors have to submit a reference from someone who's (2:29) seen them work with children, like if they've worked as a babysitter, for example. (2:36) Then they have to complete our training course, including how to do lesson plans, (2:44) and generally care for the well-being of the kids in their class. (2:49) They do a great job, I have to say.
(2:53) Right. And tell me a bit about the classes. What size will Charlie's class be? (3:01) We have a limit of 8 children in each class.
(3:06) So their instructor really gets to know them well. (3:11) They're out riding most of the time, but they have quiet times too, (3:17) where their instructor might tell them a story that's got something to do with cycling, (3:24) or get them to play a game together. It's a lot of fun.
(3:29) It must be. (3:31) Now, what happens if there's rain? Do the classes still run? (3:37) Oh yes. We don't let that put us off.
We just put on our waterproofs and keep cycling.
(3:49) Before you hear the rest of the conversation, you have some time to look at questions 6 to 10. (4:20) Now listen and answer questions 6 to 10.
(4:26) And is there anything special Charlie should bring along with him? (4:32) Well, maybe some spare clothes, especially if the weather's not so good. (4:39) And a snack for break time? (4:43) How about a drink? (4:45) No, we'll provide that. And make sure he has shoes, not sandals.
(4:51) Sure. And just at present, Charlie has to take medication every few hours, (5:00) so I'll make sure he has that. (5:03) Absolutely.
Just give us details of when he has to take it, and we'll make sure he does.
(5:11) Thanks. (5:12) Now, there are a few things you should know about day one of the camp.
(5:18) The classes normally start at 9.30 every morning. (5:24) But on day one, you should aim to get Charlie here by 9.20. (5:30) The finishing time will be 12.30 as usual. (5:36) We need the additional time because there are a few extra things to do.
(5:42) The most important is that we have a very careful check (5:46) to make sure that every child's helmet fits properly. (5:52) If it doesn't fit, we'll try to adjust it, or we'll find him another one. (5:59) But he must wear it all the time he's on the bike.
(6:04) Of course. (6:05) Then, after that, all the instructors will be waiting to meet their classes. (6:11) And they'll meet up in the tent.
(6:14) You can't miss it. (6:16) And each instructor will take their class away and get started. (6:22) Okay, well, that all sounds good.
(6:26) Now, can you tell me how much the camp costs a week? (6:33) $199. (6:35) We've managed to keep the price more or less the same as last year. (6:41) It was $190 then.
(6:45) But the places are filling up quite quickly. (6:48) Right, okay, well, I'd like to book for the... (6:56) That is the end of part one. (6:59) You now have half a minute to check your answers to part one.
