(0:02) Section 1 (0:04) You will hear a man phoning a woman who lives in an English city called Banford to get some advice about moving to that city. (0:14) First, you have some time to look at questions 1 to 5. (0:43) You will see that there is an example that has been done for you. (0:47) On this occasion only, the conversation relating to this will be played first.
(0:53) Hello, Linda speaking. (0:59) Oh, hi Linda. This is Matt Brooks.
Alex White gave me your number.
(1:05) He said you'd be able to give me some advice about moving to Banford. (1:09) Yes, Alex did mention you.
How can I help?
(1:15) Well, first of all, which area to live in? (1:18) Well, I live in Dalton, which is a really nice suburb, not too expensive, and there's a nice park. (1:33) Linda recommends a suburb called Dalton, so Dalton has been written in the space. (1:40) Now we shall begin.
(1:43) You should answer the questions as you listen because you will not hear the recording a second time. (1:51) Listen carefully and answer questions 1 to 5. (1:59) Hello, Linda speaking. (2:01) Oh, hi Linda.
This is Matt Brooks. Alex White gave me your number.
(2:08) He said you'd be able to give me some advice about moving to Banford.
(2:11) Yes, Alex did mention you. How can I help? (2:17) Well, first of all, which area to live in? (2:21) Well, I live in Dalton, which is a really nice suburb, not too expensive, and there's a nice park. (2:33) Sounds good.
Do you know how much it would be to rent a two-bedroom flat there?
(2:38) Yeah, you should be able to get something reasonable for £850 per month. (2:47) That's what people typically pay. You certainly wouldn't want to pay more than £900.
(2:55) That doesn't include bills or anything. (2:59) No, that sounds alright. I'll definitely have a look there.
(3:03) Are the transport links easy from where you live? (3:07) Well, I'm very lucky. I work in the city centre, so I don't have to use public transport. I go by bike.
(3:18) Oh, I wish I could do that. Is it safe to cycle around the city? (3:23) Yes, it's fine, and it keeps me fit. (3:29) Anyway, driving to work in the city centre would be a nightmare because there's hardly any parking, (3:38) and the traffic during the rush hour can be bad.
(3:43) I'd be working from home, but I'd have to go to London one or two days a week. (3:48) Oh, that's perfect. Getting to London is no problem.
(3:56) There's a fast train every 30 minutes, which only takes 45 minutes. (4:03) That's good. (4:04) Yeah, the train service isn't bad during the week, and they run quite late at night.
(4:12) It's weekends that are a problem. (4:17) They're always doing engineering work, and you have to take a bus to Hadham and pick up the train there, which is really slow. (4:29) But other than that, Banford's a great place to live.
I've never been happier.
(4:36) Before you hear the rest of the conversation, you have some time to look at questions 6 to 10. (5:11) Now listen and answer questions 6 to 10.
(5:18) There are some nice restaurants in the city centre and a brand new cinema, which has only been open a couple of months. (5:28) There's a good art centre too. (5:31) Sounds like Banford's got it all.
(5:33) Yes, we're really lucky. There are lots of really good aspects to living here. (5:40) The schools are good, and the hospital here is one of the best in the country.
(5:48) Everyone I know who's been there's had a positive experience. (5:53) Oh, I can give you the name of my dentist too, in Bridge Street, if you're interested. (6:03) I've been going to him for years, and I've never had any problems.
(6:09) Oh, OK, thanks. (6:11) I'll find his number and send it to you. (6:15) Thanks, that would be really helpful.
(6:18) Are you planning to visit Banford soon? (6:22) Yes, my wife and I are both coming next week. We want to make some appointments with estate agents. (6:29) I could meet you, if you like, and show you around.
(6:34) Are you sure? We'd really appreciate that. (6:38) Either Tuesday or Thursday is good for me, after 5.30. (6:45) Thursday's preferable. Tuesday I need to get home before 6pm.
(6:51) OK, great. Let me know which train you're catching, and I'll meet you in the cafe outside. (7:02) You can't miss it.
It's opposite the station and next to the museum.
(7:09) Brilliant. I'll text you next week then.
Thanks so much for all the advice.
(7:16) No problem. I'll see you next week.
(7:23) That is the end of section 1. You now have half a minute to check your answers.
