(0:00) Now turn to section 2. You'll hear an announcement which is looking for some volunteers. (0:07) First you have some time to look at questions 11 to 15. (0:36) Now listen carefully and answer questions 11 to 15.
(0:43) Continuing our broadcast of public service announcements, Worldwide Helpers announces upcoming vacancies for a number of volunteer worker positions. (0:53) All applicants must meet the following requirements. (0:56) First of all, applicants must be over 18 years of age.
The company apologises, but there can be no exceptions to this rule.
(1:05) Second, persons interested in these positions may not have police records. (1:10) Minor traffic offences like a parking ticket are of course no problem.
(1:15) But, and I quote, past and present drug users and sex offenders need not apply. (1:21) The employer will of course check with the police to verify your clean record. (1:25) In addition, applicants must supply references from past or present employers or teachers along with their recent CV.
(1:34) These references must testify as to the applicant's work habits and or character. (1:40) Remember, these are references from employers or teachers. A note from your dear old mum won't do.
(1:47) Worldwide Helpers assures me that they will contact these references to confirm they are genuine. (1:53) Although all positions are volunteer, the employer will reimburse some of your expenses. (1:59) For example, they will pay for transportation to and from the job site.
(2:04) Aside from that, the cost of phone calls is covered. (2:09) Before you hear the rest of the talk, you have some time to look at questions 16 to 20. (2:41) Now listen and answer questions 16 to 20.
(2:48) As for the positions themselves, there are three types. (2:51) The first involves assisting persons confined to wheelchairs. (2:56) For this position, volunteers must be physically fit and in excellent health.
(3:01) They must be able to lift at least 150 pounds. (3:05) They should also have a current first aid certificate from the Red Cross. (3:10) But the most important requirement is that the volunteer must have his own car.
(3:15) On Tuesday afternoons, the volunteers take their clients to various scenic spots around the city (3:21) to experience and enjoy nature. (3:24) If you don't drive, but you'd still like to get involved, (3:28) the centre has a number of openings for people to read to the blind. (3:32) Readers must, of course, read English clearly.
(3:36) Persons with no foreign accent are preferred. (3:39) For these positions, you must be available on Monday mornings. (3:44) Oh, wait, I see a note here.
(3:46) There is one opening for someone who can read Urdu. (3:50) Apparently, there is a Pakistani blind person who'd like to hear his or her native language. (3:56) But the other positions are all in English.
(3:58) And finally, there are a limited number of volunteers needed to care for disabled children. (4:04) I'm sorry, but the information I've been given does not say how many children or what disabilities they have. (4:11) In any case, you are needed to care for the children for one week in August.
(4:16) Apparently, this will be at the close of the summer holiday. (4:20) I would guess this involves helping them with the routine chores of daily life. (4:25) Again, volunteers for this position must know basic first aid, (4:29) being good health and be able to lift up to 75 pounds.
(4:34) OK, our next announcement is looking for someone to facilitate tiger breeding at the London Zoo. (4:41) And get this, it's a strictly volunteer position. (4:44) That means you don't get paid.
(4:47) Oh, my God. I'm sorry, ladies and gentlemen, but I just have to laugh. (4:56) That is the end of section two.
(4:59) You now have half a minute to check your answers.
