(0:00) You will hear part of a talk given by a member of staff at a car rental company. (0:08) First, you have some time to look at questions 11 to 16. (0:42) Now, listen carefully and answer questions 11 to 16.
(0:50) Good morning, listeners, and welcome back to Star Radio. (0:54) Today on the show, we have a visitor from Yazoo Car Rental, (0:58) who is going to give us an insight into his company and into the public transport system. (1:05) Welcome, Jonathan.
(1:06) Thank you for having me. (1:08) Yes, I would like to start by introducing my company, Yazoo Car Rental. (1:13) We are the cheapest and most reliable rental company in the city (1:17) and have won multiple awards for the quality of our services.
(1:22) This success did not come easily, however, (1:25) and it proved important that we stay fresh and are always thinking of ways to attract new customers. (1:32) Our first attempt to do this was to offer a free gift with every car rental, (1:37) which we were confident the customers would be very interested in. (1:41) The offer of a free hoover with each rental, however, did not attract any new customers, (1:46) so we quite quickly stopped offering it.
(1:51) In 2002, a new taxi company opened next door to us, (1:55) and we started losing a lot of business to them, (1:58) so we introduced an offer that we hoped might compete with their service. (2:03) We offered a new package where you could rent a car with a driver for a small extra fee. (2:09) By introducing this offer, we found that all of our customers preferred to drive the cars themselves, (2:15) so again, this offer was unsuccessful in attracting more customers.
(2:21) Learning from these mistakes, we decided to offer a package service (2:25) where the customer no longer had to come to our offices to pick up the rental car. (2:31) Instead, we could drop off and pick up the car anywhere in the city (2:34) to make the customer's experience a lot more stress-free. (2:38) This offer was very popular and increased our profits by 30%.
(2:43) In order to attract a younger demographic, we updated the models of cars that we offered for rental. (2:50) We began offering more trendy cars such as minis and smart cars (2:54) that we thought might appeal to the younger crowd, (2:57) and we also purchased them in more fun colours like reds and greens. (3:02) This offer attracted some new customers of a younger age group, however, not as many as we hoped.
(3:09) Next, I decided to offer our services at a discounted price on our website (3:15) where it could be seen by thousands of people. (3:19) I thought that this could be a great way to attract a number of new customers (3:23) who would never have heard of us before, and it worked fantastically well. (3:29) Following the success of the discount offer, we had so many customers (3:33) that it became necessary to open a new branch of the company in the centre of the city.
(3:38) The cost of renting offices in the city centre was very high, (3:42) so we hoped that our profits would justify this expensive decision. (3:47) We made enough profit to keep our city centre offices open, (3:51) but we had hoped for a greater increase in customer numbers. (3:57) Before you hear the rest of the talk, you have some time to look at questions 17 to 20.
(4:23) Now listen and answer questions 17 to 20. (4:30) Now for the second part of my talk, which is on the topic of public transport. (4:36) There are many benefits to public transport.
(4:39) For example, the recent introduction of bus lanes has meant that buses are now unaffected by traffic jams (4:45) and are able to stay on schedule. (4:49) Unfortunately, as fewer and fewer people are taking the bus nowadays, (4:54) the service has become quite inefficient. (4:56) This reduction in passengers may be due to the stories in the newspaper (5:02) about the dangers posed to pedestrian safety by the buses.
(5:07) However, this is largely untrue, (5:09) as buses are responsible for far less pedestrian-related accidents than cars. (5:15) I use the bus service often, as car petrol is so expensive nowadays (5:20) that the bus is far more affordable. (5:22) However, if I am in a rush, I prefer to take a taxi, (5:28) as they tend to get you to your destination very quickly, (5:31) so you can remain punctual for your appointments.
(5:35) I also very much enjoy flying to my destinations, (5:39) as the service is incredibly fast and the airports are always very easy to find. (5:45) Personally, my favourite mode of transportation is the bus. (5:50) Due to the lack of people using the service, (5:53) I have found that the buses are never overcrowded, (5:56) so there is always a seat available.
(5:58) They are also never dirty, as they get cleaned regularly. (6:03) However, I have found that sometimes the bus can be over a half hour behind schedule, (6:08) which can be very frustrating. (6:10) There has been a lot of fluctuation in the price of bus tickets in the last couple of years.
(6:16) In the past, £1.80 for a ticket was enough to sustain the bus companies. (6:22) However, as the price of fuel increased, so did the ticket prices. (6:27) Now the ticket prices are declining, (6:29) as the bus companies try to encourage more people to use their service again.
(6:35) Well, that's all from me today. Thank you for listening.
