(0:00) Part 1. (0:03) You will hear a woman phoning a company that converts old photographs to digital format. (0:10) First, you have some time to look at questions 1 to 3. (0:29) Now listen carefully and answer questions 1 to 3. (0:36) Hello, picture rep, can I help you? (0:38) Oh, hi. I saw your advertisement about copying pictures to disc, (0:44) and I'd like a bit more information about what you do.
(0:48) Sure, what would you like to know? (0:50) Well, I've got a box full of old family photos that's been up in the attic for years. (0:57) Some of them must be 50 or 60 years old, and I'd like to get them converted to digital format. (1:04) Sure, we can do that for you.
(1:06) Right. And what about size? The photos are all sorts of sizes. Are there any restrictions? (1:14) Well, the maximum size of photo we can do with our normal service is 30 centimetres, (1:21) and each picture must be at least 4 centimetres.
That's the minimum we can cope with.
(1:26) That should be fine. And some of them are in a frame.
(1:31) Should I take them out before I send them? (1:33) Yes, please. We can't copy them otherwise. (1:36) And also the photos must all be separate.
They mustn't be stuck into an album.
(1:42) OK, that's not a problem. So can you give me an idea of how much this will cost? (1:48) I've got about 360 photos, I think.
(1:53) We charge £195 for 300 to 400 photos for the basic service. (1:59) OK. And does that include the disc? (2:03) Yes, one disc, but you can get extra ones for £5 each.
(2:08) That's good. So do I need to pay when I send you the photos? (2:13) No, we won't need anything until we've actually copied the pictures. (2:18) Then we'll let you know how much it is, and once we've received the payments, (2:22) we'll send the parcel off to you.
(2:24) Right. (2:28) Before you hear the rest of the conversation, you have some time to look at questions 4 to 10. (3:05) Now listen and answer questions 4 to 10.
(3:12) Is there anything else you'd like to ask about our services? (3:16) Yes. I've roughly sorted out the photos into groups, according to what they're about. (3:22) So can you keep them in those groups when you copy them? (3:26) Sure.
We'll save each group in a different folder on the disc,
(3:30) and if you like, you can suggest a name for each folder. (3:34) So I could have one called Grandparents, for instance? (3:39) Exactly. (3:40) And do you do anything besides scan the photos? Like, can you make any improvements? (3:47) Yes.
In the standard service, each photo is checked,
(3:52) and we can sometimes touch up the colour a bit, or improve the contrast. (3:56) That can make a big difference. (3:59) OK.
And some of the photos are actually quite fragile.
(4:03) They won't get damaged in the process, will they? (4:06) No. If any look particularly fragile, we'd do them by hand.
(4:11) We do realise how precious these old photos can be. (4:14) Sure. (4:15) And another thing is we can make changes to a photo if you want.
(4:20) So if you want to remove an object from a photo, or maybe alter the background, we can do that. (4:27) Really? I might be interested in that. I'll have a look through the photos and see.
(4:34) Oh, and talking of fixing photos, I've got a few that aren't properly in focus. (4:40) Can you do anything to make that better? (4:43) No. I'm afraid that's one thing we can't do.
(4:46) OK. (4:48) Any other information I can give you? (4:50) Er, oh, how long will it all take? (4:54) We aim to get the copying done in 10 days. (4:57) Fine.
Right. Well, I'll get the photos packed up in a box and post them off to you.
(5:04) Right.
If you've got a strong cardboard box, that's best.
(5:08) We've found that plastic ones sometimes break in the post. (5:12) OK.
Right. Thanks for your help. Bye.
(5:17) Bye. (5:21) That is the end of Part 1. (5:23) You now have half a minute to check your answers to Part 1.
