(0:00) You will hear a supervisor in a supermarket talking to a new worker on her first day. (0:10) First, you have some time to look at questions 1 to 6. (0:44) Now listen carefully and answer questions 1 to 6. (0:52) Hello Charlotte, I'm Caden, one of the supervisors. Welcome to the team.

(0:57) Hi Aidan. (0:59) It's Caden. (1:00) I'm so sorry.

(1:01) Don't worry. People often get my name wrong. They never know how to spell it.

(1:07) It's K-A-E-D-E-N, in case you ever need to write it. (1:13) I'll try and remember. (1:16) So, there are a few practical things you need to sort out this morning.

(1:20) Then I'll show you what you're going to do today. (1:23) The email I received said to go to the front desk to show my letter of appointment and pick up my badge. (1:30) Yes.

You'll need that for the staff room and other areas of the supermarket where shoppers aren't allowed. (1:37) So, after you've finished at the front desk, I'll take you to the staff room. (1:42) Put your coat and rucksack in one of the lockers there.

Take whichever one is free. (1:47) Will I have a key? (1:49) Yes. Try not to lose it.

At the end of the day, leave it in the door for the next person to use. (1:56) Will do. (1:56) You also need to go to the HR department to see Tiffany.

She's really helpful. (2:02) I was told to bring my passport with me. HR need to take a note of the number in it? (2:09) That's right.

Or you can show your ID card. (2:12) I don't have one of those. (2:13) OK.

Tiffany will give you a uniform. They have lots in different sizes, so you just tell her what you need. (2:21) I won't come with you to HR.

I've got to go and sort something else out. (2:24) Erm, problem with a bread slicer. (2:27) Is the HR office near the staff room? (2:31) The staff room's on the first floor and HR are a couple of floors above that, on the third floor.

(2:37) There's a staircase outside the staff room. (2:39) OK. (2:40) When you've finished with HR, come and find me in the bakery section of the shop.

(2:44) I'm looking forward to getting started. (2:47) I'll just give you my phone number in case you can't find me. Have you got your phone there? (2:53) Yes.

OK. Ready. (2:57) It's 0412 665903.

(3:04) OK. Done. (3:10) Before you hear the rest of the conversation, you have some time to look at questions 7 to 10.

(3:36) Now listen and answer questions 7 to 10. (3:43) So Charlotte, your tasks today are in the bakery section, on the sushi counter and on the meat and fish counters. (3:52) The first job is to check sell-by dates on the bread and cakes.

(3:57) If any of the dates are today's, put a new price label on the packaging. (4:02) What if any of the labels are yesterday's dates or older? Do I throw those items away? (4:09) Yes, but that shouldn't happen. We check the stock every day.

(4:12) When something needs a new price label, put a yellow one on the package next to the original price. (4:18) OK. (4:19) After that, you'll go to the sushi takeaway counter.

(4:22) Will I be preparing boxes of food? (4:26) For today, you'll just be helping the staff. (4:29) Yes, of course. (4:30) You'll see lots of flat cardboard boxes at one end of the counter.

(4:34) Beneath those is where we keep the plastic boxes. (4:37) We run out of those really quickly, so you should bring more from the storeroom. (4:42) Is that my only task on the sushi counter? (4:45) No, you also need to clean the area where they prepare the dishes.

(4:49) There are cloths and bottles of spray by the sink. (4:52) Oh, and please make sure you clean that too. (4:55) Sure, that's important, isn't it? (4:57) Absolutely, but you mustn't wash up knives.

(5:00) You have to do some training before you're allowed to touch sharp objects. (5:04) What should I do if there are any? (5:07) Ask someone to put them in the dishwasher. (5:09) OK, thanks.

I don't want to get anything wrong. (5:12) Don't worry, you'll be fine. And I'll be around to help.

(5:15) Right. (5:17) Finally, the meat and fish counters. (5:19) You need to clean the area where staff serve customers, including wiping the weighing scales.

(5:25) OK. Anything else? (5:28) The fish is laid on ice, but when that starts to melt you'll need to get more from the cold room. (5:34) I know the staff on the food counters wear a hat.

Will that be the same for me? (5:40) You won't be serving customers directly, so no. (5:43) But make sure you put on thermal gloves when you take anything out of the cold room. (5:48) The temperature's low enough in there to get frostbite from touching things.

(5:51) Understood. (5:55) That is the end of part one. (5:57) You now have one minute to check your answers to part one.
