(0:01) Part 2 (0:03) You will hear a woman called Sandra Hayes who works at a bird park (0:08) talking to a group of people who want to volunteer there. (0:13) First you have some time to look at questions 11 to 15. (0:52) Now listen carefully and answer questions 11 to 15.
(1:00) Hello, my name is Sandra Hayes and I'm from Clifton Bird Park. (1:05) It's great to see so many possible volunteers here. (1:09) The park is now a very popular attraction in this area.
(1:13) I think people love coming to see so many different types of birds (1:16) in a beautiful environment. (1:19) For some species that we have here, there aren't many still alive in the wild. (1:23) So a big part of our job is to make sure we help their numbers increase.
(1:29) All the birds are native species. (1:32) We need volunteers to help the bird park officers with different jobs. (1:37) One of these is gardening.
(1:39) Obviously summer is the time when we have most visitors (1:43) but the park needs looking after all year round. (1:47) If you want to help, you can choose which day (1:49) although we do already have plenty of volunteers working Saturdays and Sundays. (1:54) But one day every four weeks is the minimum commitment that we ask for.
(2:01) So, who's the ideal volunteer for gardening work? (2:05) If you have expert knowledge about flowers and trees, great. (2:11) But we're looking more for people who are flexible (2:13) and turn up no matter whether it's raining or baking hot. (2:17) That's what'll make you the best person for the job.
(2:20) It's all teamwork, so you'll have plenty of support. (2:26) What about volunteer guides? (2:29) A guide's role is to point out the birds and talk about the conservation programme. (2:34) In general, it's people in a foreign tour group that you're responsible for.
(2:39) The Clifton residents who come to the park usually know their way around. (2:43) We get a few teachers bringing in classes (2:46) but they're the park officer's responsibility. (2:49) The last thing to mention is the park's maintenance day, which is coming up soon.
(2:55) We're hoping to get as many volunteers as possible to come and help tidy things up. (3:01) If anyone is able to drive some other volunteers to the event, (3:05) please let me know because we need help there. (3:08) The park officers will provide you with spades and drills and hammers, (3:12) all of that stuff, and they'll be offering you some refreshments too, (3:16) so it should be a good day out.
(3:21) Before you hear the rest of the talk, you have some time to look at questions 16 to 20. (3:53) Now listen and answer questions 16 to 20. (3:59) So, here's a map of Clifton Bird Park.
(4:03) As you can see, the railway line runs along the north-west of the park (4:07) and road access is on that side too, from Clifton Lane. (4:11) We want volunteers to work on a few different areas on maintenance day, (4:15) which is coming up soon. (4:18) Firstly, the wooden bridge.
I'll explain where that is.
(4:22) You can see Clifton Lane and the main gate into the park. (4:26) On the southern side of Clifton Lane is one of our car parks, (4:29) and below that there are two similar-sized ponds.
(4:33) The wooden bridge runs between those two ponds. (4:37) We just need to make it a bit stronger. (4:40) Some volunteers will be doing a bit of painting at the observation tower.
(4:44) The tower's in the south-east corner of the map. (4:48) You see there are two different-sized ponds there? (4:52) The tower's on the south side of the larger pond, at the end of the path. (4:57) We'll need about three people to help out.
(5:00) We need to replace the windows and the visitor cabins. (5:04) So, on the map, you can see our car park on the north side of Clifton Lane. (5:09) There's the woods, and on the left-hand side of the map, the railway line.
(5:14) The visitor's cabins are marked there, between the woods and the railway station. (5:20) You'll also be repairing some nesting boxes. (5:24) See the picnic area? The path you want is between there and the big pond.
(5:29) Follow it round all the way to the end. (5:32) So, as we're looking at the map now, the nesting boxes are on the right of that pond. (5:38) Finally, the boat sheds.
(5:41) Towards the top of the map, you've got that smallish pond quite near the railway line, (5:46) and there are two places marked up there. (5:48) The boat sheds are on the same side of the pond as the woods, (5:52) not the place marked at the tip of the park. (5:56) What we want you to do... (6:01) That is the end of Part 2. (6:03) You now have 30 seconds to check your answers to Part 2.
