(0:00) Part 1. You will hear a man asking about voluntary work in the village that he has just moved to. (0:08) First, you have some time to look at questions 1 to 7. (0:47) Now listen carefully and answer questions 1 to 7. (0:55) Hello, Jane Fairbank speaking. (0:58) Oh, good morning.

My name's Frank Pritchard. I've just retired and moved to Southo. (1:03) I'd like to become a volunteer and I gather you coordinate voluntary work in the village? (1:10) That's right.

(1:11) What sort of thing could I do? (1:14) Well, we need help with the village library. (1:17) We borrow books from the town library and individuals also donate them. (1:23) So one thing you could do is get involved in collecting them.

(1:27) If you've got a car, that is. (1:30) Yes, that's no problem. (1:31) The times are pretty flexible so we can arrange it to suit you.

(1:37) Oh, another thing is the records that we keep of the books we're given (1:41) and those we borrow and need to return to the town library. (1:46) It would be very useful to have another person to help keep them up to date. (1:51) Right.

I'm used to working on a computer. I presume they're computerised? (1:57) Oh, yes. (1:58) Is the library purpose built? I haven't noticed it when I've walked around the village.

(2:04) No, we simply have the use of a room in the village hall. (2:07) The West Room. It's on the left as you go in.

(2:12) I must go and have a look inside the hall. (2:14) Yes, it's a nice building. (2:17) Do you run a lunch club in the village for elderly people? I know a lot of places do.

(2:23) Yes, we have a very successful club. (2:26) I could help with transport, if that's of any use. (2:30) Oh, definitely.

People come to the club from neighbouring villages (2:34) and we're always in need of more drivers. (2:38) And does the club have groups that focus on a particular hobby too? (2:43) I could get involved in one or two, particularly if there are any art groups. (2:49) Excellent.

I'll find out where we need help and get back to you. (2:54) Fine. What about help for individual residents? Do you arrange that at all? (3:01) Yes, we do it as a one-off.

(3:03) Oh, in fact, there's Mrs Carroll. She needs a lift to the hospital next week (3:09) and we're struggling to find someone. (3:12) When's her appointment? (3:14) On Tuesday.

It would take the whole morning. (3:18) I could do that. (3:19) Oh, that would be great.

Thank you. (3:21) And also next week, we're arranging to have some work done to Mr Salisbury's house before he moves (3:29) as he isn't healthy enough to do it himself. (3:32) We've got some people to decorate his kitchen.

(3:35) But if you could do some weeding in his garden, that would be wonderful. (3:40) OK, I'd enjoy that. And presumably the day and time are flexible.

(3:46) Oh, yes. Just say when would suit you best and we'll let Mr Salisbury know. (3:52) Good.

(3:57) Before you hear the rest of the conversation, you have some time to look at questions 8 to 10. (4:17) Now listen and answer questions 8 to 10. (4:24) The Volunteers Group also organises monthly social events, (4:29) which is a great way to meet other people, of course.

(4:31) Uh-huh. (4:33) So next month, on the 19th of October, we're holding a quiz. (4:39) A couple of residents are great at planning unusual ones and we always fill the village hall.

(4:45) That sounds like fun. Can I do anything to help? (4:49) Well, because of the number of people, we need plenty of refreshments for halfway through. (4:56) So if you could provide any, we'd be grateful.

(5:00) I'm sure I could. I'll think about what to make and let you know. (5:04) Thank you.

(5:06) Then on November the 18th, we're holding a dance, also in the village hall. (5:12) We've booked a band that specialises in music of the 1930s. (5:18) They've been before and we've had a lot of requests to bring them back.

(5:23) I'm not really a dancer, but I'd like to do something to help. (5:27) Well, we sell tickets in advance. (5:31) And having an extra person to check them at the door as people arrive would be good.

(5:37) It can be quite a bottleneck if everyone arrives at once. (5:40) OK, I'm happy with that. (5:43) We're also arranging a New Year's Eve party.

(5:47) We're expecting that to be a really big event. (5:50) So instead of the village hall, it'll be held in the Mountford Hotel. (5:55) The...? (5:56) Mountford.

(5:57) M-O-U-N-T-F-O-R-T Hotel. (6:06) It isn't in Southow itself, but it's only a couple of miles away. (6:11) The hotel will be providing dinner and we've booked a band.

(6:16) The one thing we haven't got yet is a poster. (6:20) That isn't something you could do by any chance, is it? (6:23) Well, actually, yes. (6:25) Before I retired, I was a graphic designer.

(6:29) So that's right up my street. (6:31) Oh, perfect. (6:32) I'll give you the details and then perhaps you could send me a draft? (6:37) Of course.

(6:41) That is the end of part one. (6:44) You now have half a minute to check your answers to part one.
