(0:02) Now turn to section 3, track 22. Section 3. (0:13) You will hear a tutor and a student discussing a seminar. (0:18) First you have some time to look at questions 21 to 26.
(0:53) Now listen carefully and answer questions 21 to 26. (1:03) Come in. (1:06) Hi.
(1:06) Oh, hello Ahmed. How are you? (1:09) Fine, thanks. (1:12) Have a seat.
(1:15) So, how do you think the seminar went last week? (1:19) Oh, well, I enjoyed it, yes. (1:22) Though I'm not sure I really followed parts of the discussion that took place. (1:27) You know, about the theory and all that.
(1:30) Well, we can talk about that later. (1:34) But were you comfortable in the group? (1:36) Oh, it's better I think than working on your own. (1:40) Though you're comparing yourself all the time with the other students there.
(1:44) Okay. (1:45) Well, let's talk about how you did and look at some strategies to help you in the future. (1:51) That would be great.
(1:52) Now, one of the things that students often overlook when they go to seminars (1:57) is that you do need to prepare for them. (2:00) You can't rely on other people. (2:02) I know.
(2:03) And I did look at the results of the experiments we did in class and write them up beforehand, as you said. (2:10) Yes. (2:11) And that was good.
(2:12) It made it easier to analyse them. (2:15) But you have to do some background reading as well. (2:18) Did you get the list of articles I sent round? (2:21) Mm-hmm.
(2:22) I've started to read them. (2:24) Okay. (2:24) Well, you'll know that for next time.
(2:27) Yes, yes, sure. (2:28) So, let's move on to your participation in the seminar. (2:33) Right.
(2:33) Perhaps you can tell me how you think that went. (2:38) Yeah, well, I'm not used to talking to more than a couple of people. (2:43) It's very different from the way we learn in my home country.
(2:46) Yes, I appreciate that. (2:48) So, I think I, um, well, I know I should have included everyone, (2:53) but I think I kept turning to the person next to me. (2:56) Is that because you were avoiding eye contact? (3:00) I don't think so.
(3:01) I'm not shy. (3:02) It's just habit, I think. (3:04) Well, that will improve as we do more seminars.
(3:07) Uh-huh. (3:08) Um, another difficulty is knowing when to speak. (3:12) Like, when it's your turn? (3:14) Yes.
(3:15) I felt I did wait for a pause. (3:18) Yes, you handled that quite well. (3:20) The thing I'm really concerned about is keeping up with the discussion.
(3:24) Ah, does your mind wander off? (3:26) Sometimes. (3:27) I jot down a lot of information, (3:29) but I still find myself thinking about something else (3:32) when lots of other students are talking. (3:35) Hmm.
(3:36) If there's an assignment to do at the end of a group, that usually helps. (3:41) I'm sure it does. (3:42) Okay.
(3:43) Now, the last thing I want to look at is the role that you play in the seminar. (3:48) What do you mean? (3:49) Well, when students work in groups, they don't all behave the same way. (3:54) Some students are quiet.
(3:57) Some look for support. (3:58) Some ask a lot of questions. (4:01) Oh.
(4:01) That's a new idea to me. (4:03) I don't know what I'm like. (4:05) That's probably because you're thinking about your own performance all the time.
(4:09) I guess so. (4:11) I mean, should I be different in some way? (4:14) What I would say is that when we do the next seminar, (4:18) you should look more at the people around you. (4:20) You know, look outside yourself.
(4:22) Like ask myself how they feel? (4:25) Yes, or what they're looking for from the group. (4:29) Okay. (4:29) It doesn't take much, but it's important to watch what other students are doing.
(4:34) Okay. (4:35) I'll do that. (4:36) Fine.
(4:37) Now, I'm going to suggest... (4:43) Before you hear the rest of the conversation, (4:45) you have some time to look at questions 27 to 30. (5:20) Now listen and answer questions 27 to 30. (5:28) Now, I'm going to suggest a couple of strategies for next week's seminar.
(5:34) Okay. (5:35) That's great. (5:36) I need to participate more.
(5:38) Well, it's not a question of saying more, (5:41) but we need everyone to feel comfortable about giving their views. (5:45) Then the discussion is better. (5:47) Yes.
(5:49) So, you're a confident person. (5:52) Should I make sure I'm near someone who's quiet? (5:55) You can do, (5:56) but it's more about how well you pay attention to other students. (6:00) Okay.
(6:01) So, I need to be attentive. (6:02) Yes. (6:03) And then encourage someone else to say more by saying, (6:07) what did you mean when you said... (6:09) or what do you think about the idea that... (6:13) That way I'm talking.
(6:16) Yes. (6:17) But you'll find that other people will talk too. (6:20) You'll all start to get really involved.
(6:23) Right. (6:24) They're good suggestions. (6:26) The other thing that can really help is the way you take notes.
(6:29) I know I write down everything, (6:32) but I should be stricter with myself. (6:34) Well, you actually need to think a few days ahead. (6:38) Really? (6:38) Yes.
(6:40) What's the topic and what's the best way of making notes? (6:44) I see. (6:45) So, I have a strategy when I walk in the room. (6:48) Exactly.
(6:50) Then when you read through them later, (6:51) they'll make sense and you won't have to write them out again. (6:55) I always have to do that. (6:57) The other thing I would say is that you should include a small column in your notes (7:02) where you can jot down things you want to go back to before the seminar ends.
(7:07) Like a reminder. (7:08) Yes. (7:09) Notes aren't just for later.
(7:12) You can use them as a prompt when there's a pause in the discussion. (7:15) That's been really helpful. (7:17) Okay.
(7:18) See you in class tomorrow. (7:19) Thanks. (7:23) That is the end of section 3. (7:27) You now have half a minute to check your answers.
