(0:01) You will hear a telephone conversation between a man who wants to rent an apartment and an agent at a property rental service. (0:11) First, you have some time to look at questions 1 to 5. (0:41) Now listen carefully and answer questions 1 to 5. (0:49) Good morning, AA Property. Can I help you? (0:52) Yes, good morning.
I'm looking for an apartment to rent.
(0:56) OK. Is that here in Birmingham? (0:59) That's right.
(1:00) Right. I'll just take some personal details if I may. So, if I can just take your name? (1:07) Kevin Walker.
(1:08) Right. And can I have your present address please? (1:13) Well, we're staying with friends at present, so the address is 354 Forest Road. (1:20) Is that Forest with one R? (1:23) That's right.
And that's in West Bromwich. I'm afraid I don't know the postcode.
(1:29) That's OK.
And a contact phone number?
(1:38) 07817 983602. (1:39) Lovely. And if I could just ask your occupation? (1:43) Certainly.
I'm a dentist and my wife's a teacher, but she's at home at present looking after the children.
(1:49) OK. So, I'll just put your occupation.
(1:54) Right. Well, now I'll take some details about the kind of property you're looking for. (1:59) You said you're looking for an apartment, is that right? (2:03) Yeah.
(2:03) OK. So, how many bedrooms do you want? (2:07) Two. (2:08) And did you want it furnished? (2:09) No, unfurnished.
(2:11) Right. Well, that gives you quite a bit more choice, so that's good. (2:16) And what's the maximum rent you'd be prepared to pay? (2:20) Well, we'd like to stay under £600 if possible, but we could go up to £650 for the right place.
(2:29) Right. So, do you have any other definite requirements? (2:33) Well, coming back to the bedrooms, they have to be doubles, both of them. (2:38) OK.
I'll make a note of that.
(2:44) Before you hear the rest of the conversation, you have some time to look at questions 6 to 10. (3:15) Now listen and answer questions 6 to 10.
(3:23) So, are you looking for something straight away? I assume you are if you're staying with friends. (3:29) Well, as soon as possible, yes. (3:32) Well, it's October 17th today, so we're probably looking at November 1st at the earliest.
Would that be OK?
(3:40) Well, I'd have preferred something in October, but OK, let's put that date down for now. (3:45) Fine. Now, is there anything else you'd like? (3:50) Well, our last flat had a garage, but actually we never used it, so I'm not really worried about that.
(3:56) But we'd like a balcony if possible. It's nice not to be too shut in. (4:01) Yes.
You'll find most modern apartments do have one. It's only the converted properties that don't.
(4:07) But of course, if you're in an older property, you might have use of a garden.
Would that be a possible alternative?
(4:13) Oh, yes. Either of those would be good. (4:16) What about transport? Would you want off-street parking? (4:20) No, parking doesn't matter, but it'd be good to have somewhere not too far from a station if possible.
(4:26) But it's not essential. I've got a bike. (4:29) Right.
And what else? You'll want a lounge, and will you want a separate dining room?
(4:35) Well, not really. We tend to eat in the kitchen, so it'd be good if that was large enough for us to do that. (4:42) That might be difficult, but I'll make a note of it anyway.
(4:46) Right. Well, let's have a look at what we've got.
