Writing Task 1: Graph Types

Detailed strategies, vocab & phrases for each Task 1 type

Task 1 Academic: Describe visual data (graphs, tables, diagrams, maps). Min. 150 words, recommended 20 mins. Don't give your opinion.

Bar Charts

Bar charts compare categories or changes over time.

Key Vocabulary

Comparisons: higher/lower than, the highest/lowest, the greatest/the least

Trends: increase, decrease, fluctuate, decline, remain steady, plummet, surge

Quantity: a large proportion, a small fraction, the majority, a minority, a significant number, a considerable amount

Rate of Change: gradual rise/fall, rapid increase, dramatic decline, modest growth

Period: over the period, during the years, from...to..., by the end of..., throughout the period

Common Mistakes

Listing data instead of analyzing trends β€” describe overall trends

Incorrect use of comparisons β€” use 'higher than', 'lower than'

Repetitive vocabulary β€” use 'the majority', 'a small fraction' for variety

"In 2010, the percentage of people using public transport was significantly higher than in previous years."

Line Graphs

Line graphs show data changes over time.

Key Vocabulary

Describing Trends: rose steadily, declined sharply, fluctuated, remained stable, leveled off

Direction: upward/downward trend, on the rise, falling trend, plateaued, spiked

Movement: climbed to, dropped to, reached, stabilized at, showed a marked increase

Degree: slightly, sharply, gradually, dramatically, consistently, noticeably

Common Mistakes

Describing every data point β€” highlight peaks, dips & overall trends

Inconsistent tenses β€” Past Tense for past data, Future for predictions

"The graph shows a steady increase in internet users, reaching a peak in 2020."

Tables

Tables contain numerical data to compare & analyze.

Key Vocabulary

Quantity: a majority, a minority, a fraction, the bulk of, in total, aggregate

Comparisons: higher than, lower than, as much as, half of, twice as many

Range: the highest value, the lowest figure, falls between, tops at, bottoms at

Percentages: accounted for, made up, constituted, represented

Common Mistakes

Describing every cell β€” group data & compare categories

Missing extreme values β€” always mention highs & lows

"Sales figures for electronics reached the highest value at 55,000 units, compared to only 8,000 for clothing."

Pie Charts

Pie charts show proportions & shares of a whole.

Key Vocabulary

Proportions: constituted, comprised, accounted for, made up, represented

Shares: a large portion, a small fraction, the largest/smallest segment, a sizable share

Distribution: divided into, split among, allocated to, apportioned

Common Mistakes

Listing every percentage β€” group large & small segments

Repeating 'percent' β€” use 'share', 'portion', 'segment'

"Housing costs constituted the largest portion of the budget, making up 35% of total expenses."

Diagrams / Process

Process diagrams describe production or natural process stages.

Key Vocabulary

Sequence: first, next, then, after that, finally, subsequently, in the final stage

Passive Voice: is heated, is transported, is mixed, is produced, is packed, is stored

Transformations: converted into, changed into, broken down into, transformed into

Stage Connectors: following this, in the following step, at the same time, meanwhile

Common Mistakes

Not using Passive Voice β€” processes focus on actions, not doers

Describing stages out of order β€” follow diagram arrows

Missing the final result β€” always describe the end product

"In the first stage, raw materials are gathered and stored for processing."

Maps

Maps show area changes or compare two periods.

Key Vocabulary

Space: to the north, south of, in the center, along the coastline, in the eastern part, next to

Changes: transformed into, converted to, replaced by, expanded, reduced in size

Additions & Removals: introduced, demolished, added, removed, extended, reconstructed

Time Markers: between 1990 and 2020, over the following decade, in recent years

Common Mistakes

Inaccurate spatial terms β€” be precise: 'next to', 'north of', 'in the center'

No period indication β€” always state 'in 1990' or 'by 2020'

Tense confusion β€” Past Tense for past changes, Present for unchanged

"In 2000, a large park was located to the north of the residential area; by 2020, it had been replaced by a shopping complex."
